End of Life Choice Bill

A Member’s Bill in the name of David Seymour drawn from the ballot on June 8. The bill sets up a process to allow people with a terminal illness or a grievous and irremediable medical condition the ability to  request assisted death from an approved medical practioner. First reading On Dec 13, 2017 with a personal vote held. It was sent to the Justice Committee for consideration by 76 to 44. Given an extended consideration time with a report due on Sept 27, 2018. Reported back on April 9 with the committee unable to agree on amendments or whether the Bill should pass or not. Seymour indicated he will propose amendments tightening eligibility to the terminally ill and that the Bill itself be subject to a referendum at the next election. Third reading Nov 13 2019.
