Privacy Bill

Introduced on March 20, 2018. The bill repeals and replaces the Privacy Act 1993, as recommended by the Law Commission’s 2011 review of the Act. It overhauls and updates many provisions of the Act. Completed first reading on April 11 and referred to the Justice Committee. All parties in support. The report back  has been extended from Nov 22 to March 13, 2019. Reported back on March 13 with a large number of changes including on organisations and businesses requirement to disclose privacy breaches. The committee rejected submissions calling for a ‘right to be forgotten’. Second reading completed on Aug 7, 2019  with all parties in support. Committee stage completed June 3.
